First introduced in the 15th century and otherwise known as a tester bed, the four poster bed has a vertical column in each corner. They provide support for the tester or upper, with a railed attachment that allows a curtain to be drawn around the bed.  Besides keeping the occupants warm, the curtains would also provide vital privacy —with bodyguards and servants often sleeping in the same room.
